Recall Of Some 2018 Indian motorcycles. Engine Could Self-Start.

The Minnesota company started a recall yesterday Thursday of about 3300 motorcycles  from the 2018 model year. Documents posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say corrosion in the switch can cause an electrical short. That can start the engine if the key fob is nearby. The agency says if the engine starts unintentionally and the bike is in an enclosed space, people could be exposed to carbon monoxide.

Affected models include certain 2018 Indian Chief, Chief Classic, Chief Dark Horse, Chief Vintage, Chieftain, Chieftain Classic, Chieftain Dark Horse, Chieftain Elite, Chieftain Limited, Springfield, and Springfield Dark Horse. Dealers will replace the switch at no cost to owners.

if you doubt an affected bike just park it in gear and/or shouldn’t store your fob so close until you have the recall done… nothing to worry about, kind of comical though : )

second thoughts… dicky switch with an electrical short isn’t real healthy… replace asap if suspect : )

wt, depending on where/what part of the starter circuit the affected wiring is connected to, the neutral circuit switch may not be involved. That would make the bike lurch forward when the starter engaged. Probably best to leave it in neutral unless the Bulletin advises otherwise.

At least they haven’t started on fire yet like everything else Polaris makes…

Leave it in gear, there’s a thought. First place the fine china and yer wife’s new car in front of it, though..

agree with smithncustom, cool feature, remote start, too bad it is random. On the positive side, recall is free and gives you an excuse to go to the dealer and buy more stuff for you bike.

    regarding previous comments…
I’m good with electrics and I can tell you
A short at the starter switch like this isn’t going to shorten the circuit to the point of being able to turn the starter yet bypass other open switches in such a circuit!

Just call Lt a BMW. People will pay extra for it. Now see, if it was foot start, you wouldn’t have to worry about that kind of thing. Or, and here is a strange thought, if it had a Frick in’ key!

The neutral switch completes the circuit, so leaving it in gear would prevent it from starting and the bike will not launch forward because the clutch has to be engaged to put the bike in gear. As for the Harley riders it will start and the Brakes works without recall work!

wheel time & Kent are exactly right. I should have read it more carefully instead of sticking my foot in my mouth and apologizing now. Not sure why I read starter relay instead of starter switch, but I did, and my reply above is 100% wrong. The safety interlocks such as the sidestand and/or neutral switches would prevent the engine from starting.
