I wish Baker nothing but success though it does strike me as odd that someone with a 3000 dollar, 20 yr. old bike would spend 3000 on it to give it a 6th gear. Seems like a pretty limited market unless those components are interchangeable with other Baker drivetrain part that limits their loss if few of these get sold.

Agreed, thats more than the bike!

I’m looking at the 7 speed right now for my ’07 Roadking which is also around $3000, but from what I’ve heard about how well it shifts and smooth pull between gears I will probably pull the trigger, no doubt the quality is there so if it makes me happier with a bike I like to ride I can justify it.

If there is any bike that needs an overdrive it is the solid mounted Evo 5 speed Sportsters. There are a lot of Sportsterholics out there that love their bikes. These Baker XL6 are easy to install and make a huge difference.

Lots of these year bikes that are worth many times $3k, more than a few have paint that cost more than this tranny. More choices are a good thing. If there was such a thing as a 20 year old Victory, I bet you’d be cheering if Baker came out with a product for it.

Why is there not such a product for 2004 and up Sportsters?

No trap door on rubber mounted XL’s. WAY more labor intensive to do tranny work.

I can see this being popular with the pre-XB Buell crowd.

Wow, i wonder how much labor is involved in hours avg. doing a typical Installation?

Bert makes great stuff and is a really down to earth guy to talk to.

@rebel…pull that trigger for the 7 speed. I have one in an 08 FXDF and it’s night and day better than the Cruisedrive it replaced. No more clunking on gear changes and better off the line giddy-up.

if they ever do one for the non trap door sportsters Im in… always find myself looking for that imaginary 6th gear

MSRP $2850 cost more than i paid for the bike, the bike costed me $2700,just like the wet clutch conversion to a belt, cost more than the bike,( can you say Greedy as hell )

You can Mark @ R&D motorsports, he will rework you stock transmission and have every single piece REM ISF treated + a zippers trap door and world wide ceramic bearing all for about $2500… Just had it all done to mine… But ya or you could get a Baker 6…I wouldn’t count on it helping the MPG much … gear taller and takes more throttle to go a given speed. These things have a way of balancing themselves out. 6th is an indirect path through the Baker and is therefore less efficient, so you might even go backwards on MPG…. Food for thought. alot of money for a BIG MAYBE.

The XL6 is an overdrive transmission designed to give an RPM reduction at highway speeds to provide a better quality riding experience. With that being said, the BAKER transmission is 99% efficient in 5th gear as a direct drive. The BAKER 6th gear is 7% less efficient than the 5th gear but does provide a 500RPM reduction which improves the fuel economy on the highway.
