Painted Warning Signs At The Scene Of Deadly Motorcycle Accidents

saveCoroners in six counties in North Carolina will soon use a stencil to spray paint on the road a cross and message that says, “Look Twice Save A Life” at the scene of all deadly motorcycle accidents. Anderson County Deputy Coroner Don McCown said he hopes this message will increase awareness and decrease the number of accidents involving motorcycles.

“I thought it was an excellent thing considering the number of motorcycle fatalities we have in this state,” said McCown.  “We’re hoping it will remind the public that someone died at this location, and more than likely they died of distracted driving or someone not being aware of their surroundings.”

The number one reason given for most deadly motorcycle accidents is that the driver never saw the rider. “There are a lot of motorcycle riders out this time of year and we have to share the road,” said McCown.

I guess the intention is good but…

Don’t South Dakota do just that.

Very admirable but I doubt it will save anyone.

Stupid is as stupid does. I was stopped at a red light behind a giant white Ford truck and had been there for a good two minutes. I was on a black Superglide with a very loud aftermarket exhaust. This guy drove into me from behind. He told me and then told the responding cop: ” I didn’t see the bike”. Yes, he didn’t hear me either. You just can’t fix stupid.

South Dakota does erect signs at the locations of fatal accidents and as you can imagine, there are thousands of them.

I think they may have a positive impact on cyclists but I would not be surprised to find out they don’t even register to most non-cyclists.

Brother-in-law was rear-ended in a similar fashion on a well-lit road where every other block is a signal by some drunks. Sadly, you can’t fix stupid. They also stated they did not see the bike (in fact, denying they were even in an accident). Luckily, everyone survived.

Assume they can’t see you, but if they do see you, assume they’re trying to kill you…

    “… “We’re hoping …”

    “Hope” never “Changed” anything.
(thought we’d figured that out by now)

When possible, move faster then the speed of traffic to maximize your ability to dictate your surroundings.

Everyone else is a moron…. Believe it, act on it.

Probably won’t be long ’til the ACLU will be weighing in on the use of the Cross. I concur, you can’t fix stupid. Just a thought. Best, Later Jay

I’ve been rear-ended twice while waiting for a traffic light. In both cases, the cage driver claimed they didn’t see me…typical response I guess, go figure. Both times I was lucky and only my bike was damaged.

I agree that more than likely, only other riders will see the signs and know or care what it means.

Does the Deputy coroner really think that the Motorcycle driver is Distracted also? “We’re hoping it will remind the public that someone died at this location, and more than likely they died of distracted driving or someone not being aware of their surroundings.” – He implies that the Biker dies of distracted Driving or someone, maybe even the Biker is not aware of their surroundings. That is the message that I read into the Governor having to help the Bikers. What do the do if the Biker is Jewish? Do they have a Stencil for the Jewish Star?

At first I was thinking ‘a cross’ and in an X, the I though maybe a cross as in the sign for medical but then I saw the photo and its a Christian cross they intend painting. I’m all for personal expression and I’d never with to suppress anyone’s ‘personal’ religious leanings but in this case one has to ask why a Christian cross? Does the message come only from Christians, or only to Christians, do only Christians ride motorcycles, or will the message only apply to Christians, or maybe the thought is people will notice it more that way, I’m not sure why or what a Christian cross has to do with any motorcycle death unless the person involved was Christian and would like their site of demise marked in such a manner. I guess we could ask why not too, just seems oddly myopic to me. End of rant 🙂
