Burly Café Racer Tail Section For Harley Sportster

BurlyCafeTail3As I wrote many times during these last years, old and new built Café Racer bikes are back in style and Café is fast becoming the new “Black”…. The Sportster based Café Racer has also become a style in its own right with a magic that only Harley can bring to the table. The one missing piece of that Ton Up formula is often a traditional tail section, but thanks to the folks at Burly Brand it looks like that’s about to change.

BurlyCafeTail2Their new solo seat/cowl is designed to bolt to the 1986-2003 Sportster chassis and complete the XL’s café transformation. Unlike the Café seats that sit on a stock fender, they’ve created a true tail section, opening up the rear of the bike for an authentic look. Available in partially covered with paintable black gel coat as well as a full covered version.

BurlyCafeTail1Although the original 60’s Café Racer is a motorcycle that has been modified for speed and handling rather than comfort, both Burly seats feature a gel insert in the seating area for maximum riding comfort. Requires removal of fender, supporting struts and relocation of taillight and signals. Includes mounting hardware for OEM electronics. Made in the USA. Both seat & fender work well together on a Sporty. Congrats for a great part.

    Nice, but not $500 nice.

  11. 11 Romano Apr 5th, 2013 at 4:44 pm

I think that $500 is very reasonable if you think a custom rear fender and seat fitting perfectly together with a true cafe stance. Try to ask your favorite shop or builder to do this. For $1200? $1500? $1800?

After-market Sporty seat makers must grimace. How I didn’t think about it?

Is there a problem with your site? I couldn’t get past choosing year and model after clicking on the “partial cover” and then “buy it now.”

  17. 17 Burly Brand Apr 5th, 2013 at 7:45 pm

    What year is your bike?

Looks like a great way to overdo a retro touch, by making it too easy for the fad whores to follow suit. I guess “cafe racers” will be the fat-tire high-neck chopper of the mid-teens.

  19. 19 Burly Brand Apr 6th, 2013 at 8:17 am

We should be so lucky. They had fat tire chopper in 1915?

  20. 20 Apr 6th, 2013 at 2:24 pm

Too short, too small and the cowl is too high with a gap around the frame. It would suit a 250cc more than an XL.A good first attempt, but it’s like a Jap teenagers idea of what a café bike looks like.

Here are some other guys that have been doing it for a while (if nothing else – it may serve as inspiration)..,

Thanks Guys (except for Terence who appears to have a thing for Japanese boys). Version for newer chassis is in play. Look for it later this year.
