Nokia Patents Vibrating Tattoos

Would it be better if we could always avoid annoying ringtones? Of course you can setup your smartphone in “vibrating only”, but with the risk of not feeling the vibrations to alert you.

Those wearing tattoos may soon be in luck with a patent filed by Nokia on tattoos that would vibrate when your phone is ringing or the battery is running low.

The tattoo would be made with ferromagnetic ink, which could detect magnetic fields and feel  when your phone when ringing. According to Nokia’s patent the tattoo would be inserted under the skin, meaning users would need to have a minor surgical procedure.

To dismiss an alert, which would feel like a tingling sensation, the user would simply have to scratch his arm! If you’re not interested in embedding phone links in your skin, Nokia has another suggestion. Its patent application also covers “magnetic materials” attachable to the skin, like a label or a badge. The sketches Nokia included show what look like stickers pasted to the wearer’s wrist or abdomen! Karen Lachtanski, a spokeswoman for Nokia, said she couldn’t speak to when the technology might be commercially developed, if ever…

Sounds like it could be another sex toy , only long distance, if the tatoo or sticker was placed in certain areas . . . . my bad!

Like Eddie in Christmas Vacation, you’ll piss your pants when you turn on the microwave.

I thought bone density sound-wave transmission was far fetched. This is where they implant a sensor into your jaw bone. The sound-waves travel to your ear and you can hear the person talking. I spend 8 years in the wireless industry when they were looking at actually implementing stupid crap like this. However, this vibrating tattoo is about the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.

Is the tattoo going to be reliant on your phones SSID or SIM card number to vibrate or will any phone in a close proximity make you vibrate? Anyone have any idea on how many electromagnetic fields they encounter in a day? I currently work in a major guitar manufacturing plant… guitar pickups emit EMF… I’d be vibrating all day long.

One second thought, olgraybeard might not have a bad idea… could make my day go much faster!

I’m waiting for the brain implant so I can plug myself in. What I’d really like to see is a big red flashing light on top of all vehicles that activates when the driver is on their “mobile device”. Would make it easier to avoid the distracted mouth breathers. Of course all the flashing lights might blind you too.

I hope the ones with ink won’t ever need an MRI!

There’s the technology to make us walking magnetic strips like on the back of our CC’s or ID cards. Nice.

    Good point Jeff.

Legislation is not the only thing that is going to stop distracted-cell-driving. Cell phone OEMs have to take the proactive role.

In the state I live in, talking on the phone behind the wheel is a primary offense but you still see people babbling away all the time, oblivious to those around them. Apparently, also oblivious to the deadly statistics and comparisons to driving under the influence. (“Not me!” yeah, right.)
