Jay Leno’s september 11TH Celebrity Signed Harley-Davidson

Dear Cyril,
“I read the article on your blog, “To Post Or Not To Post. That Is The Question.”, so I am going to try to make this snappy…
After doing some research on your site, I see that you know Jay Leno and are familiar with the Harley Davidsons that he collects celebrity signatures on and donates to specific causes.  To my knowledge, he has done this act of patronage on three occasions.  The causes were 9/11, the 2004 Tsunami, and Hurricane Katrina.  My dad, Frank Davis, bid $360,200 on the 2001 Harley Davidson FXDL Dyna Low Rider that Leno donated to help the victims of 9/11… but not before he walked out of the bank with a six figure loan.  He appeared on the “Tonight Show” and accepted his Harley Davidson.  He was only 37 years old when he obligated himself to this cause so he figured he would be able to take care of the bank note over the next couple years, with no problem.  Unfortunately, this was not the case.  He died in August of 2003 while trying to save his friend from drowning.  He was our”rock” and his passing devastated my family in many, many ways.
That is where I got brought onto the picture.  At the time of his death, I was 21 years old and my little sister, Lacey, was only 18.   We were totally unprepared to deal with the sudden loss of our father and definitely had no idea what our future had in store for us.  No one comes out of the wood-works to guide you through this type of situation.  My dad’s estate was very complicated and we made several “expensive” mistakes.  People took advantage of our lack of experience.  We have been ripped off.  We have faced foreclosures and repossessions.  We have literally fought to preserve our livelihood.
After five long years, we have somehow managed to settle most of his estate and we still have the motorcycle.  We are ready to sell it and have began our “attempt”.  We sent out letters regarding the sale to everyone that we could possibly think of. Any advice or suggestions about this sale would be very much appreciated.  Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Crystal Davis”

$360,200-motorcycle is obscene. i can understand supporting a great cause, but not when you have to take out a six-figure loan to do so.

Whew! That’s a tough question. The original Signed Motorcycle’s value was high as it was intended as a charity donation by a wealthy buyer to help 9/11 families. But now that it is in private hands, with any future income from its sale is going to its current owners, and not for charity. it hasn’t much more actual value than a 7 year old Harley with a bad painted job that needs to be replaced.

That said, the best place to sell it would be at a well-known motorsports auction like Barret Jackson, where a wealthy collector, museum, hotel or casino would see it and be interested in buying as an attraction. Marketed that way, I’d estimate the selling price could be anywhere from $30,000 – $150,000 less the auction house’s commisssion.

I am the cousin of Frank Davis, He was a man of honor, he always helped others he learned that from his mama my aunt, he was a decent man and if it meant for him to take a loan out to help those in need he would do it and then work harder to pay it off, He took an opportunity to help someone although it meant he would have to pay for a while, I do not see too many people “PAYING IT FORWARD” like he did. Unfortunately he was taken from us too soon, and believe me the world LOST, a kind person. God bless you Cousin! and may you Rest In Peace.
